Glazed ceramic wall tile basics

Wall tiles are almost always glazed ceramic rather than vitrified — they don't need the same load-bearing strength as a floor tile, and the glaze is what gives the printed pattern and sheen. Body strength matters less here than consistent glaze thickness and print registration.

Standard sizes and matched series

Common wall tile sizes run 300×450, 250×375 and 300×600 mm, usually sold as a series — a main field tile plus a matching décor piece and sometimes a border or listello. Ordering only the field tile and skipping the décor pieces is a common first-time mistake; check what the series actually includes before you quote a job.

Finishes: glossy, matt and décor

Glossy finishes dominate budget and mid-range ranges; matt and textured finishes have grown in higher-end residential and commercial specs. Décor tiles (printed accent pieces) and borders are sold in much smaller quantities than the field tile — confirm the ratio a manufacturer recommends per square metre of field tile.

Ordering a matched series correctly

Order décor and border pieces from the same production batch as the field tile where possible — glaze shade can shift slightly between batches, which shows up more on accent pieces than on a full wall of field tile. See our tile sizes guide for how this affects coverage calculations.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between wall tiles and floor tiles?

Wall tiles are almost always glazed ceramic rather than vitrified, since they don't need the same load-bearing strength. The glaze quality and print registration matter more than body density.

Do I need to order décor pieces separately?

Décor and border pieces are usually sold alongside the main field tile as part of a matched series, in smaller quantities. Confirm what's included before quoting a job so you don't miss the accent pieces.

What sizes are most common for wall tiles?

300×450, 250×375 and 300×600 mm are the most common formats, typically sold as a series with a matching décor piece.
